JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's men's soccer team (2-4-1, 0-1-0 MAAC) almost came back against Sacred Heart (2-3-2, 1-0-0 MAAC) late in the game, but the Pioneers held on for a close, 2-1, win at Jaroschak Field on Saturday.
In their first conference matchup of the season, the Peacocks fought hard till the final whistle, but couldn't manage to score the equalizer down the stretch. Sacred Heart wasted no time getting on the board, scoring a goal in the third minute, which turned out to be a big difference maker.
As the game continued, both teams had solid scoring opportunities but were unable to put their chances in the back of the net. The Pioneers broke that drought with their second goal in the 86th minute. Saint Peter's trailed, 0-2, in the closing moments when
Tim Strele netted his seventh goal of the season assisted by
Micah O'Garro.
The Peacocks came inches away from the game-tying goal with under 30 seconds remaining in regulation, but the shot went just wide as the Pioneers took the victory. Saint Peter's goalkeeper
Moritz Conrad finished the day with three saves.
