Game Day Student Worker Positions

Duties & Responsibilities:
The Athletic Department is in search of Saint Peter's University student workers interested in assisting in a number of game-day areas of need. This commitment entails becoming a vital member of the broadcast production, communications, marketing/ticketing and/or operations departments; each student worker, regardless of their role, will be relied upon in many day-to-day and seasonal responsibilities for the department. Any and all undergraduate/graduate students on campus are welcome to apply regardless of major/background, with preference given to those students who are eligible for federal work study from Financial Aid Office. Please note that hours are based on home athletics events schedules and include weekdays, weeknights, weekends and some holidays.

Student workers are used in the following areas and students may elect to work in as many different roles as they would like:

Production Assistants (Approx. 2-6/game)

  • Students are needed to help produce home athletics events that are broadcast on ESPN3/+ and the Peacocks Digital Network; no prior training is needed!
  • Student production assistants typically begin as camera operators (typically 1-4 needed per broadcast depending on whether event is streamed on ESPN3/+ or PDN).
  • After each game/production, students will assist with breakdown of equipment (cameras & tripods, headsets, audio equipment, cabling, etc.).
  • Based on aptitude and progression over time, students will have the opportunity to help produce broadcasts from the production van for ESPN3/+ broadcasts and assist in any of the following roles: audio engineer, technical director, graphics operator, replay technician, and/or director. 
Marketing/Ticketing (3-4/basketball game)
  • The Saint Peter's Athletics marketing team welcomes students to apply for game day positions for men's and women's basketball.
  • This area is responsible for greeting fans at the entrance of each facility prior to each basketball home game, ensuring the utmost customer service experience for our fans, and ensuring proper protocol is taking place for ticketing related items.
  • Greet and welcome fans at each entrance of the designated facility.
  • Distribute giveaways to fans as they walk into the game, when applicable.
  • Rip tickets as fans enter the game.
  • Answer questions fans may have.
Music/In-Game DJ (1/game)
  • Control all music played at athletic events.
Operations/Game Management (Varies by sport, minimum 3/game)
  • Student workers will be in charge of setup and breakdown of all our varsity athletic events on campus.
  • Workers are required to show up approximately two hours before game time to help set up fields/facility for that day's event(s) and then help breakdown following the conclusion of the event.
  • During the game, you will be working the event by working lines, taking tickets, crowd control and escorting teams.
PA Announcers & Play-by-Play Broadcasters (1-2/game)
  • Serve as PA Announcer at select home athletic events (tryout necessary).
  • Take your voice to the airwaves and serve as a play-by-play or color analyst for various Saint Peter's University broadcasts, including soccer, volleyball, baseball and/or softball
  • While previous experience (especially in PA announcing) is encouraged, it is not necessarily required. A tryout will be conducted for PA announcers prior to hiring.
Statistics Staff (1-2/game)
  • Assist in the keeping of official statistics at athletic events. Students will have the opportunity to use the software that collegiate athletic communication departments nationwide utilize in keeping statistics.
  • At the discretion of the communications staff, selected students can serve as inputters or spotters at basketball and volleyball and can serve as stats inputter at soccer, baseball and softball games.

What Will You Gain?

  • Hands-on experience in working Division I collegiate athletic events in key areas of game staging and operations.
  • Key operational skills needed for a broad number of game day positions in collegiate athletics events that could be applied toward work in college, minor league and/or professional sports.

  • Familiarity with sports and the basic rules/flow of each game that Saint Peter's hosts!

Internships (Semester)

**Unpaid, must be for college credit**

Description & Goals
The athletics department welcomes college students to join our team for semester-long internships in a number of areas of operation. Applicants are welcome both from Saint Peter's University and other schools! A typical internship will be focused on working the majority of home athletics events, and thus would be expected to cater their schedules to accommodate those needs. Weekdays, weeknights, weekends and some holiday work will be required. In addition to working at home athletics events, interns will be expected to work "office hours" during the course of a typical week, especially during those weeks where there are fewer (or no) athletics events to work. Interns will assist in various projects/tasks assigned by their supervisor over the course of a given semester and will range in scope and material. 

Internship General Requirements:

  • Must be a student pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university (not solely restricted to Saint Peter's University).
  • Interns are needed for the entire academic year, but you may elect to intern for a specific semester.
  • Internship is unpaid and it is the student's responsibility to arrange with their academic advisor(s) on securing class credit in lieu of payment.
  • Intern will be expected to work majority of home games throughout the semester that he/she chooses to dork during in addition to a certain amount of office hours each week (either on campus at the athletic department or remotely) to help with ongoing projects throughout the year.

Broadcast Production Internship

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with broadcast productions of the department's athletics events ESPN3/+ and/or Peacocks Digital Network platforms. 
  • Be present for pregame setup, live event production and postgame breakdown of athletics broadcasts.
  • Serve any number of required positions during broadcast productions, including camera operators, technical director, graphic operator and/or replay technician. 
  • Oversee and provide guidance student and/or freelance staff as needed.
  • When not directly serving in a production role, shoot home sporting events for highlights/b-roll compilation.
  • Editing postgame highlights of athletics events shortly after the completion of that day/night's event.
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:
  • Highly motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports broadcast production (college/pro)
  • Previous experience in broadcast production and video editing skills are a plus and preference will be given to those candidates! 
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, trends, etc.
  • Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to multi-task and work within a team environment
  • Demonstrates a positive and personable demeanor
  • Responsible and punctual

Communications Internship

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the promotion/publicity of Saint Peter's University Athletics and the accomplishments of its 16 NCAA Division I varsity programs and student-athletes.
  • Under the direction of the communications staff, serve in a variety of different game day roles during home athletics events (running social media accounts, keeping live statistics, writing press releases, etc.).
  • Assist in a variety of year-long responsibilities, including -- but not limited to -- updating sections of the official athletics website (student-athlete bios and record books), labeling/cropping photos, editing b-roll video, etc.
  • Other department duties as assigned and as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Major in communications and/or sports management
  • Highly-motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports, particularly in communications/media relations
  • Strong writing skills with knowledge of AP style and sound grammar with preference given to those who have written for sports
  • Ability to work under a tight deadline
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, trends, etc., with preference given to those who have run social accounts for a sports team in the past
  • Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to multi-task and work within a team environment
  • Demonstrates a positive and personable demeanor
  • Responsible and punctual

Creative Content Internship

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Intern will utilize Adobe CC software for the production of an array of creative content that is utilized across a variety of platforms and to many different constituents, including social media channels, website, videos, broadcasts, sponsorship elements, video boards, signage and other material for the athletics department.
  • Create and design content to promote individual student-athletes, teams, upcoming events/games, the athletics department and the university.
  • Develop promotional material utilized by all teams and with an emphasis on the ticketed events of men's and women's basketball (schedule posters, flyers, brochures, pamphlets, etc.).
  • Based on proficiency, intern will be given the freedom to express creativity and will be expected to pitch ideas for aforementioned material, as well as other projects that are pertinent to the industry (social media, signage, facility graphics, etc.)
  • Assist in production of feature stories highlighting specific student-athletes/teams (graphics, videos, etc.).
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:
  • DEMONSTRATED knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere) is REQUIRED!
  • Highly-motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports and content creation (college/pro)
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, trends, etc.
  • Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to multi-task and work within a team environment
  • Demonstrates a positive and personable demeanor

Marketing & Ticketing Internship

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work all home men's and women's basketball games to assist in areas of ticketing and marketing.
  • Serve as an usher at men's and women's basketball games to help fans find correct seat locations and answer any questions as needed.
  • Assist in all areas of ticketing at ticketed events (all men's/women's home games and any MAAC Championship home game hosted by Saint Peter's), including general ticket sale, will call, comp list monitoring, monitoring season ticket holder entrance, and other duties as needed.
  • Assist in all in-game marketing events, especially at men's/women's basketball, with promotions including fan/student competitions, halftime games, youth games/events, national anthem singers, performances by the cheer and dance teams, etc.
  • Collaborate with the marketing staff to pitch ideas for promotions and giveaways and assist in creating promotion schedules for each of the varsity teams.
  • Aid the athletics department in other game day duties as needed, including running social media accounts for teams/providing content for home games.
Qualifications:
  • Major in communications, sports management, business and/or marketing
  • Highly-motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports, particularly in marketing/promotions
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, trends, etc., with preference given to those who have run social accounts for a sports team in the past
  • Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to multi-task and work within a team environment
  • Demonstrates a positive and personable demeanor

Operations Internship

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the facilities and operations department, assist in the setup and breakdown of all varsity athletic events on campus.
  • Interns will be required to show up approximately two hours before game time (varies by sport) to help set up fields/facility for that day's event(s) and then help breakdown following the conclusion of the event.
  • During the game, interns will be expected to fill in a variety of areas of need, including working lines (soccer/volleyball), mopping (basketball), shagging foul balls (baseball/softball), taking tickets, crowd control, escorting teams, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Photography Internship

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as de facto official photographer of the department depending on proficiency/experience. 
  • Take photos at as many home Saint Peter's University athletics events as possible utilizing department equipment and/or personal equipment (if applicable). 
  • Oversee post-production/editing of all photos taken (including labeling and cropping photos as specified by the communications department).
  • Assist in all department photo shoots for each team/student-athlete's photo/marketing day, including taking headshots and "posed" marketing photos of every student-athlete, as well as team photos.
  • Take photos at special events as needed (example: Hall of Fame induction ceremony).
Qualifications:
  • DEMONSTRATED experience as a photographer, especially at sporting events, with an intermediate-to-advanced understanding of photography equipment, as well as experience with Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop is REQUIRED!
  • Highly-motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports and/or photography
