JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team (4-3-2, 1-2-0 MAAC) fell 2-1 to the Marist Red Foxes (2-5-2, 1-0-2 MAAC) Saturday afternoon at Jaroschak Field on Family Day. The Red Foxes secured their first conference victory of the season, while
Heidi Miles tallied her first goal for the Peacocks.
WHAT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF: The Peacocks came out fast to start the match, nearly scoring within the first two minutes when
Alexa De Barros chipped the ball past the Marist defense to
Joana Dias, but was called offside. Just three minutes later, Saint Peter's struck for real —Miles took her defender one-on-one and sliced the ball over the Red Foxes' keeper, hitting the opposite panel to give the Peacocks the early lead.
After the restart, Marist took control on offense, peppering the goal with 13 shots throughout the remainder of the half. In the 43rd minute, the Red Foxes finally converted off a corner, as Gabby Tirado slotted the ball off a rebound, leveling the match before half.
At the break, Marist held a 13-5 advantage in total shots and a slim 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
SECOND HALF: Saint Peter's tried to rally throughout the second half, outshooting Marist 6-4 and holding a 3-1 edge in shots on goal, but nothing would stick. In the 79th minute, the Red Foxes found the winner off another corner. Tirado served the ball into the penalty area, where Julia Loncar buried it deep into the right corner.
The closing minute of play saw three red cards issued to Saint Peter's.
At the final whistle, Marist held a 17-11 advantage in total shots with a narrow 7-6 lead in shots on goal. Both
Bergljot Kristinsdottir and Red Foxes keeper Maddy Catalanotti recorded five saves apiece.
