LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ–The Saint Peter's women's soccer team (4-3-3, 1-2-1) and Rider (2-4-3, 0-2-2) battled to a scoreless draw Wednesday night at Ben Cohen Field in their final MAAC showdown of the month.
WHAT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF: Rider came out of the gate fired up, looking for their first win in conference play, rattling off seven shots in the opening 15 minutes — but
Bergljot Kristinsdottir stood tall with four early saves. On the other end,
Heidi Miles tried to break through for the Peacocks, but one attempt sailed high while a Bronc defender blocked the other.
Midway through the half, Saint Peter's earned a chance off a corner kick, where
Wilma Thodhlana looked to slot one in but misfired over the net. Minutes later,
Alexa De Barros fired off a shot from the top of the box, but her effort carried just over the crossbar.
At the break, Rider had a 10-4 advantage in shots (6-0 SOG) and a 4-2 edge in corners. Sophomore Ava Ferrie led the attack with three shots, all on frame. Despite the pressure, Kristinsdottir kept the Broncs scoreless with six saves.
SECOND HALF: Rider kicked off the second half, but it was Saint Peter's who pressed first. Within the opening minute,
Joana Dias fired from inside the 18 but sailed high, followed shortly by a Miles attempt from outside the box that missed wide.
Rider returned the action just minutes later with back-to-back corners, and sophomore Valgerður Sigurjónsdóttir tested the Peacocks from the center of the box, but the defense stood firm.
In the final 20 minutes of play, De Barros,
Macey Williams, and
Rebecca Tarc all saw chances to break the deadlock, but their efforts missed the frame. The Peacocks held Rider to just five shots in the second half.
At the final whistle, Rider held a slim 15-12 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corners. Saint Peter's went without a shot on frame while Rider tallied seven. Miles (3) and De Barros (4) both recorded season highs in shots. Kristinsdottir collected her third shutout of the season with seven saves.
