EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team mounted a second-half rally but ultimately came up short, falling 3-2 to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
WHAT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF:
While the Peacocks kicked off to start the match, the Mountaineers wasted no time gaining control. Just five minutes in, sophomore Peyton Gallagher buried a shot into the upper-left corner to open the scoring. After the restart, Mount St. Mary's tried another attempt, but
Bergljot Kristinsdottir denied it with a confident save. Saint Peter's tested the Mount keeper with a pair of looks from
Heidi Miles, but both were turned away.
At the 16-minute mark, Mount St. Mary's struck again to double their lead when sophomore Joelle Hamel cleaned up off a rebound from a blocked Mountaineer shot. Despite efforts from
Macey Williams, Julia Pinho Magno, and Amanda Andreus, the Peacocks couldn't find a breakthrough.
In the 30th minute, Mount St. Mary's found the back of the net once more, junior Lillian Young connected with a header to make it 3-0. Saint Peter's managed one more chance before the half, but Andreus's effort was stopped.
At the break, both teams were even at six shots apiece, with the Mount recording one corner.
SECOND HALF:
The Mountaineers pepper the net with shots to start the second half, though nothing landed. The Peacocks finally broke through with a lightning-quick surge. In the 62nd minute,
Alexa De Barros slipped a pass to Pinho Magno, who finished cleanly for her first of the day. Not even a minute later,
Joana Dias found De Barros in stride, and the she slotted home to suddenly pull Saint Peter's within one at 3-2.
The Peacocks attempted to swing momentum in their favor with opportunities created by Pinho Magno, De Barros,
Wilma Thodhlana, and Dias, who generated chances down the stretch, but despite the flurry, the equalizer never came as the Mount defense held firm.
At the end of the match, Mount St. Mary's finished with a slim 15-13 edge in shots, including an 8-5 advantage on target, while the Peacocks led 4-3 in corners. Magno Pinho led Saint Peter's with four shots, two on frame, and a goal. Kristinsdottir tallied five saves on the day.
