Women’s Soccer Falls on the Road at Manhattan

RIVERDALE, NY- The Saint Peter's (4-5-3, 2-2-1) women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the Manhattan Jaspers (5-4-4, 3-2-3) Wednesday afternoon at Gaelic Park.

WHAT HAPPENED:
FIRST HALF: Manhattan struck early, opening the scoring within the first 20 minutes with a pair of goals just four minutes apart. The Jaspers applied heavy pressure in the attacking third, registering four consecutive shots — all from outside the 18-yard box — with Bergljot Kristinsdottir stopping three and the defense blocking another, before being rewarded a corner. Off the serve by Amaya Hill, Lauren Ahearn converted from the edge of the box with a header to give Manhattan the lead.

Minutes after the reset, the Jaspers capitalized again. Winning the ball back following a foul, Olivia McMaster slotted a low shot into the right corner from the corner of the box to double the advantage.

Joana Dias and Devin Reeves each looked to spark the Peacocks' attack late in the half, but the Jasper defense blocked both of their attempts.

At the break, Manhattan held a 10-2 advantage in shots, including a 5-0 edge on target, and led 9-2 in fouls.

SECOND HALF: Manhattan continued to press and pepper the goal with shots throughout the second half, and added to their lead in the 74th minute, when McMaster struck again from nearly the same spot as her first goal to make it 3-0. Less than five minutes later, Manhattan converted off a corner as Nevaeh D'Aloia fired home to extend the margin.

Saint Peter's continued to push in the final minutes, Stella Accettola recorded two late attempts — one forcing a save and another sailing high — while Julia Magno Pinho's effort went wide.

At the final whistle, Manhattan had an 18-5 advantage in shots, including an 8-1 edge on target. The Jaspers also tallied eight corners and led 25-4 in fouls. Kristinsdottir finished the day with four saves.
