JERSEY CITY, NJ– The Saint Peter's women's soccer team fell 4-0 in its conference matchup against Fairfield at Jaroschak Field, Saturday afternoon. The Stags were led by Maddy Theriault, who recorded her first collegiate hat trick, tallying seven points on the rainy afternoon.
WHAT HAPPENED:
FIRST HALF: Saint Peter's kicked off to start the match, but it was Fairfield who struck first and fast. Cassidy Clinton sent an over-the-top ball to Theriault, who settled and slipped it under
Bergljot Kristinsdottir for the early lead.
The Stags doubled their advantage in the 25th minute. Theriault dribbled down the side of the box before cutting back and chipping the ball to Emilie Cook, who laid it off for Sam Kersey to finish deep into the right corner.
Four minutes later, Theriault struck again, cutting inside and firing a shot from 25 yards out that skipped under Kristinsdottir to make it 3–0.
Saint Peter's found spurts of attacking moments in the first half but recorded just three shot opportunities. Off a free kick,
Macey Williams sent a service into the box that found
Wilma Thodhlana, whose header went just wide. In the 33rd minute,
Julia Pinho Magno broke through her defender and fired a shot from distance, narrowly missing left. And with under five minutes to go,
Sydney Ragland forced first-half keeper Katie Wright into her lone save of the half.
At the break, Fairfield led 14–3 in shots with a 6–1 advantage in shots on goal.
SECOND HALF: Fairfield continued to pressure early in the second half and found the net once more in the 68th minute. After a Saint Peter's corner, the Stags quickly countered upfield, where Theriault broke through the back line and finished low to the opposite corner to complete her hat trick.
Following a wave of substitutions midway through the half, the Peacocks began to find rhythm offensively, outshooting Fairfield 6–2 in the final 25 minutes.
Amanda Andreus, Devin Reeves, Allyssia Merisier, Mayla McLean, and
Heidi Miles each registered attempts, but none found the back of the net.
At the final whistle, Fairfield led 23–10 in total shots and 11–5 in shots on goal. The Stags' goalkeepers combined for five saves, while Kristinsdottir recorded seven for Saint Peter's.
