LOUDONVILLE, NY–The Saint Peter's women's soccer team was unable to break through offensively, falling 3-0 to Siena on Wednesday afternoon at Hickey Field.
WHAT HAPPENED:
FIRST HALF: Saint Peter's opened the match with early pressure, earning a corner and an early look from
Joana Dias, but couldn't capitalize. Just seven minutes in, Siena struck first. After a sequence of passes upfield, Cate Flanagan sent a low cross into the six-yard box, where Briana Neary finished into the upper-center of the goal to open the scoring.
At the 22-minute mark, Siena struck again to double their lead; off a throw-in, Catherine Rogers laid the ball back to Abby Daly, who launched a strike over 20 yards out that tucked inside the right panel.
With under 15 minutes to play in the half,
Tuva Norell fired a free kick that forced the keeper into a diving save, and
Mayla McLean followed with a pair of attempts, but neither found the target.
At halftime, Siena led 7–4 in shots with a 4–1 edge on goal, while Saint Peter's held a 4–0 advantage in corners.
SECOND HALF
Siena peppered the net with shots in the first 25 minutes of the half and connected again in the 70th minute on a counterattack from their goal kick. From the touchline, Flanagan zipped a ball into the six, where Daly got a foot on it.
Wilma Thodhlana and
Devin Reeves both put their bodies on the line to block the attempt, but Maya Costa was there to clean it up and make it 3–0.
After the restart, the Peacocks nearly struck back. Dias intercepted a pass back to the keeper, broke free from Cate Burns' grasp, and fired an attempt, but defender Lindsey Harrington deflected it out for a corner. Off the ensuing service, Thodhlana chopped a shot toward the lower left corner, but a Siena defender blocked the chance.
Siena closed the match with six more shot attempts, though
Bergljot Kristinsdottir made four strong saves while two missed the frame.
At the final whistle, Siena led 19–6 in shots with a 10–2 advantage on goal. Saint Peter's held a 7–5 edge in corners, and Kristinsdottir finished with seven saves.
