JERSEY CITY, N.J.- Saint Peter's University baseball senior
Sam Haney (Lake Oswego, Ore.) drove in five runs, including clubbing his ninth homerun of the season to set the program single season mark, as the Peacocks capped a wild comeback with six runs in their final at-bat to win in walk-off fashion 13-12 over the Siena College Saints in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
The Peacocks improve to 7-37 overall and 4-16 in the MAAC, while the Saints drop to 11-36 and 5-12 in conference play.
Siena built an 11-1 lead through their at-bat in the sixth. Senior
Anthony Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.) got the Peacocks slowly back into the game with a run scoring single in the sixth.
Saint Peter's added two runs in the seventh on a two-run single by junior
Rece Stapp (Keller Texas) to close the gap to 11-4.
Siena added a run in the seventh but the Peacocks answered with a three-spot in their half of the inning. Haney blasted his record setting homerun in the inning, a three-run shot to cut the score to 12-7 heading to the ninth.
Saint Peter's loaded the based with no outs as Abbatine drove in the first run of the inning with a single. Junior
Nick Markantonatos (Portland, Ore.) singled in two runs, while Haney drove in the game-tying runs with a two-run single to even the score at 12-12.
The Peacocks again loaded the bases with one out. Pinch hitter
Sam Delcollo (Kennett Square, Pa.) grounded into a fielder's choice, force out at second but hustled down the line to beat the throw to first for the attempted double play, allowing Haney to score the winning run.
Haney's big day at the plate consisted of 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, five RBI and one homerun. Abbatine went 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Stapp went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Zach Walker (Poway, Calif.) tossed three innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits to earn the win.
The Peacocks and the Saints conclude their three-game weekend series on Sunday, May 7 at 1 pm at Jaroschak Field.
