SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team lost their season opener and the first game in the Jen Leedham era by a score of 73-39 on Monday night. Not only did the Peacocks debut a whole new staff, but they also had seven players make their debut.
The Peacocks held the lead for the first two and a half minutes of the game, as junior guard Rachel Kuhl drilled a three pointer to open the game. Kuhl would end up being the Peacocks' leading scorer in the contest as she scored 12, including going four-of-six from three-point land. She added two steals, two assists, a rebound, and a block.
Despite trailing at the break 36-14, the Peacocks came out and fought hard, beating the Pirates in the third quarter by a score of 17-15. The team made five three pointers in the third frame, and they went 7-14 from downtown on the night (50%).
Freshman guard Jada Leonard had a solid performance in her first game as a Peacock. She scored seven points and added four rebounds. She played 23 minutes off of the bench for SPU.
Only two Peacocks played more than 30 minutes in the game, as freshman guard Tiara Bellamy (33) and Jazmine Carter (39) played almost the whole game for SPU. Carter finished with four points and a team high seven boards while Bellamy scored five and got five rebounds.
