JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team drops a tough in-state matchup to the FDU Knights 34-57 on Wednesday, Dec 10 at Run Baby Run Arena.
The Peacocks began the contest with a hot start, but the consistency by the FDU Knights quickly brought rewards, as the Knights 37.5 percent shooting from the field was just enough to stall a Peacock squad led once again by
De'Naya Rippey. Rippey with another full day's work of 13 points and seven boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: Rippey earned the first basket of the game with a spot up mid range jumper before driving inside and bullying her way to the basket.
Nikola Zdenkova cashed in on a corner three for the Peacocks to jump out to a 6-to-0 run to start the game. After a 3-pointer by the Knights, the Peacocks walked into the media timeout with a 6-3 lead over FDU. However, post media timeout, the Peacocks found themselves in a scoring slump that was ended by a long mid range jumper by Rippey, ending the quarter with a score of 8-13.
SECOND QUARTER: Carys Roy began the second quarter going to work, grabbing multiple rebounds before scoring herself on a second chance opportunity and later cashing in from the free throw line. Heading into the media timeout, the Peacocks found themselves down 11-21 to a tough FDU squad. Coming out of the timeout, Rippey sparked the Peacocks with a and-1 before electrifying the crowd with a corner three. Turi joined the scoring party herself with a basket inside to cut the lead to 19-23 with two minutes to go. After a 5-to-0 run by the Knights, the first half ended by a score of 19-28 in favor of FDU.
THIRD QUARTER: To begin the third quarter, it was Roy getting things started for the Peacocks, cashing in on a trip to the free throw line. Zdenkova kept the scoring going with a triple on a fast break. Heading into the media timeout, the Peacocks were down 23-37.
Jayshlynn Vega earned the first points coming out of the timeout for Saint Peter's on a long range triple. After a
Layla Lays basket at the free throw line, the Peacocks entered the last three minutes down 27-44. After three minutes of back and forth defensive battles, the quarter ended with a score of 27-46.
FOURTH QUARTER: Jineen Ayyash began the fourth quarter with a layup inside to give the Peacocks their first basket of the final period. The Peacocks defense held strong, limiting the Knights to their first basket after four minutes of play. After a Laws free throw, the score was set at 30-52 in favor of FDU. With under four minutes to go, Rippey added another score to her line, this time with a free throw. Vega also added to her total with a drive inside and a crafty layup.
Sierra Patricio knocked down a free throw within the final minute to head to the final score of 34-57.
UP NEXT: The Peacocks head on the road to begin MAAC play against Canisius on Friday, Dec 19. and Sunday, Dec 21 against Niagara.
