Peacocks Defeated In Tough Clash With Army

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated in a highly contested matchup against Army, 43-65 on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Run Baby Run Arena. The Peacocks and Black Knights battled for the sixth time in program history, this time as part of a special Kids Day contest. The crowd was electric throughout the game, with multiple times where the noise affected the events that transpired on the court. 

In the loss, De'Naya Rippey once again was sensational. Posting a team best 15 points and a team high two steals. Layla Laws also with a solid performance of seven points to go along with six boards. 


HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER:
The Peacock defense started out strong with a block from Laws and a steal from Rippey. Rippey cashed in on the first points for the Peacocks with a tough layup and converting on a free throw as well. Laws and Eszter Turi added to the point spree with a deep 3-pointer and a basket inside. The Black Knights held firm with strong defense on Saint Peter's. With the score after one being 8-15 in favor of Army. 

SECOND QUARTER: Laws got the party started for the Peacocks off a spin layup inside and then a mid range jumper by Jada Mills. However, thanks to some strong scoring by the Black Knights, the Peacocks found themselves down 12-23 going into the media timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Rippey earned the first basket for Saint Peter's, this time by a mid range jumper. Turi kept adding points for the Peacocks with two solid trips to the line, going 3-for-4 on free throws. The Peacocks rallied and fought hard, with the score at the end of the first half 17-31 with the Black Knights still out in front. The Peacock defense has held firm, forcing Army to shoot 27.8 percent from 3-point range. 

THIRD QUARTER: Carys Roy kicked off the second half with a bang, forcing a foul inside and cashing in at the line. Rippey continued to be dominant inside the paint, scoring her first points of the half with a strong spinning layup. With about six minutes to go in the third, the Peacocks found themselves down 20-33. Heading into the media timeout, Saint Peter's found themselves down 22-36 with two huge free throws coming from Rippey. Coming out of the timeout, Mills earned the first basket for the Peacocks on a pull up jumper from the mid range before Nikola Zdenkova knocked down a deep 3-pointer. Laws kept the scoring for the Peacocks, this time with a deep mid range jumper. With Mills earning two points at the line, the Peacocks ended the 3rd quarter playing stout defense, heading into the fourth with a score of 31-47.

FOURTH QUARTER: Rippey started the fourth quarter with a strong basket inside for the Peacocks. Despite the early basket, the Peacocks struggled to find the bottom of the net early. The drought ended after two converted free throws from Laila Grant, with the score halfway through the fourth being 35-53 in favor of Army. After a timeout, Rippey scored the first bucket for the Peacocks thanks to a great pass inside from Louella Allana. Turi added another basket to her scoring total, this time on a second chance putback. Jayshlynn Vega woke up the crowd with a huge triple in front of the Peacock bench. Rippey scored the final basket for the Peacocks with a drive inside, heading to the end score being 43-65 as Saint Peter's suffered their first home defeat of the year. 

UP NEXT: The Peacocks will stay home for the next two matchups against Monmouth on Sunday, Dec. 7 and FDU on Wednesday, Dec. 10th.
