Opening Word: 
  • The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team will travel east across the Hudson Tuesday afternoon as they prepare to meet the St. John's Red Storm in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
  • The Peacocks are coming off their season-opening win over NJIT on Nov. 25, in which they edged out the Highlanders 69-64 in overtime.
  • The victory marks the third consecutive season opener in which the Peacocks have walked away triumphant, as head coach Marc Mitchell stays perfect in his season debuts with Saint Peter's.
  • Redshirt senior Taiah Thornton led the squad in the affair, coming away with the first triple-double of her collegiate career, recording 15 points, 11 rebounds, and an impressive 11 steals.
  • The Peacocks had three other double-digit scorers in the tilt against NJIT, as freshman forward Ajia James recorded a 13 point, 10 rebound double-double in her first collegiate game, while junior Binta Salawu (14 points) and redshirt senior Kendrea Williams (13 points) added to the team's success.
Series with the Red Storm: 
  • Saint Peter's and St. John's have met 10 times since the first matchup between the two sides on Dec. 4, 1990. The Peacocks hold a 6-4 advantage over the Red Storm in the all-time series.
  • The exchanges have been historically close between the two squads, including three overtime decisions and five games that have been decided by five points or less.
  • In road games against St. John's, Saint Peter's holds an overall record of 3-2.
  • In their last time out, the Peacocks came away with a 63-61 victory in Queens on Dec. 14, 2003.
Starting Off Strong
  • Thornton's 11 steals against NJIT nearly tied the program record of 13, set by Carolyn Gadsden against Dartmouth on Jan. 21, 1984.
  • James's 13 point, 10 rebound performance marks the first double-double by a Saint Peter's rookie since Wil'Lisha Jackson finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Niagara on Feb. 4, 2019.
  • The Nov. 25 win over NJIT marks the second straight season opener in which the Peacocks have had four double-digit scorers.
  • Thornton's 15 point outing is the redshirt senior's 24th double-digit game since joining the start of last season, while Williams's 13 points mark her 22nd game of scoring 10 or more in the blue and white.
