Baseball Plays Two Close Games but Ultimately Drops Double-Header to CCSU

The Peacocks lost both games of a double-header to CCSU on Saturday

NEW BRITAIN, CT – The Saint Peter's baseball team made a late comeback attempt in game one and gave up a 6-4 lead in the sixth inning of game two in Saturday's double-header at Central Connecticut State, resulting in two defeats. The Peacocks fell 5-3, and 9-6 in the two games.
 
Game 1 Notes
  • CCSU scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead over Saint Peter's.
  • Trailing by four, the Peacocks made a late comeback attempt in the seventh inning.
  • The duo of Jared Quintero and Jared Paladino led off the inning with a double and single respectively, to get in scorer's position.
  • Andrew Connor put the first Peacock run on the board hitting a double to right center that scored Quintero.
  • Trent Koerner came to the plate next and doubled for an RBI that sent Jesse Matos home to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • Two batters later, Koerner scored from third following a passed ball putting the team behind, 4-3.
  • CCSU added a run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead over Saint Peter's to 5-3.
  • The Peacocks left one runner on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, failing to complete the comeback.
 
Game 2 Notes
  • In the second game, Saint Peter's took control early.
  • The Peacocks scored first in the opening inning by way of an RBI single by Peter Ferony to put the Peacocks up 1-0.
  • The score remained at 1-0, with the Peacocks giving up just two hits through four innings.
  • In the top of the fifth, Koerner hit the Peacocks first home run of the season to right field, extending the lead to 2-0.
  • With a runner on, Hunter Mason hit a triple to right center, scoring Edwin Feliciano to keep the inning alive.
  • A sacrifice fly by Nicholas Sciubba sent Mason home to put the Peacocks ahead 4-0 with two innings to play.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, CCSU responded with four runs to knot the game at 4-4.
  • Saint Peter's answered in the sixth with two more runs.
  • Koerner recorded an RBI single that allowed John Gavura to score and on a throwing error by the CCSU shortstop, Paladino scored, giving the Peacocks a lead of 6-4.
  • CCSU again responded, scoring three runs in the sixth, to take a 9-6 lead into the final inning of game two.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Peacocks went 1-2-3, ending the game with a 9-6 defeat.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • In game one, Connor had the best performance going 2 for 4 from the plate with an RBI, while Koerner went 1 of 2 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • In game two, Koerner went 2 of 3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Mason followed, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sciubba also recorded an RBI and a run scored in the second game.
