BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's volleyball team (5-6) notched its first sweep of the season, defeating LIU (2-7) in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) at Steinberg Wellness Center on Tuesday. The Peacocks are now just one win away from matching their win total from last year.
Saint Peter's started the match slow, but as the team got settled in, the Peacocks started to gain confidence due to large scoring runs. They came from behind in the first and third sets on their way to a 3-0 victory.
"We were able to get scoring runs tonight because of our serve and first contact execution," head coach
Fernando Colon said after the win. "When we were serving tough, it put them out of system, and our defense was able to transition into points."
"Offensively, we kept good balance and everyone contributed, which kept their block guessing. Once we got into a rhythm, our energy carried us through those stretches."
The Peacocks' ability to get the Sharks out of system led to big things defensively. Saint Peter's totaled seven blocks at the net while holding LIU to a .174 hitting percentage, including a .070 hitting percentage in the third set.
Elena Bilhartz racked up a team-high five blocks while four other Peacocks recorded two blocks. In their return to Steinberg Wellness Center,
Sibana González Acevedo tallied 10 kills and nine digs, and
Indira T. Benitez Dumeng recorded three kills, three digs and two blocks.
