JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team battled to a 1–1 draw with St. Bonaventure on Thursday afternoon at Jaroschak Field in a match that featured plenty of chances — and plenty of cards.
The Peacocks dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Bonnies 23–3 with a 7–2 edge in shots on goal and a commanding 12–0 margin in corner kicks.
WHAT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF:
St. Bonaventure kicked off to open the match, but Saint Peter's quickly seized control and began pressing into the attacking third.
Julia Pinho Magno fired the first shot just two minutes in, forcing the Bonnies' keeper into an early save.
The Peacocks peppered the net with nine attempts before St. Bonaventure found a breakthrough. With just under 20 minutes to go in the first half, St. Bonaventure broke through the defense, smashing their first attempt of the game into the back of the net, putting the Bonnies up 1-0.
Saint Peter's regrouped and continued to attack.
Joana Dias nearly equalized from inside the 18, aiming low to the left, but the Bonnies' keeper denied her. The Peacocks rattled off five shots and two corners in a four-minute span but couldn't find the finishing touch.
The intensity ramped up late in the half. In the 31st minute, SBU's Abigail Wysong was shown a red card while Saint Peter's
Stella Accettola was cautioned. Three more yellows followed before the break — to
Macey Williams (41'), Pinho Magno (44'), and SBU's Juliana Castellano (44').
Despite firing 17 shots, including six on frame, and earning 10 corners, the Peacocks went into the half trailing 1–0.
SECOND HALF:
Seven minutes into the half, the Peacocks nearly equalized when
Rebecca Tarc unleashed a strike from 20 yards out that rattled the crossbar.
In the 62nd minute, Pinho Magno tried her luck from distance, but her shot met the same fate, ricocheting off the bar as well. A few minutes later, she and
Alexa De Barros kicked back and aimed, but the Bonnies' defense blocked those attempts.
St. Bonaventure limited Saint Peter's to just seven shots and two corners in the second half, a stark contrast to the Peacocks' first-half dominance, despite being a player down.
In the 73rd minute, SPU's
Tessa Heffron was booked, followed by a yellow card to SBU's Paula Sanabria Diaz in the 76th. On the free kick, De Barros rolled a clever pass into the box for Pinho Magno, who calmly slotted the equalizer past the keeper, tying the match, 1–1.
