Peacocks Tie Dragons In Season Opener After Late Goal

Ragland's first career goal comes in the 87th minute to help Peacocks escape Philadelphia with a tie

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team notched its first goal of the 2025 season in the 87th minute against Drexel to tie the Dragons, 1-1, at Vidas Field Thursday evening. The Peacock who scored the equalizer was Sydney Ragland, who registered her first career goal.

The Peacocks (0-0-1) started the game on alert in the defensive zone after the Dragons (0-0-1) rattled off several shots in the first few minutes. As Saint Peter's settled into the game, they still couldn't maintain consistent possession as the Dragons stayed on the attack. Drexel took 10 shots before the 11th one went in in the 43rd minute to lead, 1-0, at halftime.

In the second half, the Peacocks found their footing and started to see some shot attempts. Saint Peter's and Drexel were even in shots in the final 45 minutes with seven each. Grassifulli's goal was a ricochet in the middle of the box that tied the game at 1-1. She was assisted by Gianna Grassifulli and Julia Pinho Magno.

Pinho Magno and Mayla McLean led the team with two shots apiece in their Saint Peter's debuts. Bergljot Kristinsdottir played a great game in goal for the Peaocks, recording nine saves on 10 total shots on net. She also had to go up against five corner kick opportunities.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF:
The Peacocks and Dragons went scoreless for almost the entirety of the first half before Drexel finally put one in the back of the net in the 43rd minute. Saint Peter's goalkeeper Kristinsdottir kept the Peacocks in it with six saves in the half after seeing 11 total shots.

The Peacocks' offensive attack had trouble finding scoring chances in the first 45 minutes, as they didn't register a shot or a corner kick. There was one instance where SPU had a good look as Jacqui Weber made her way to the net, but she was stopped just short of the box.

SECOND HALF: Saint Peter's played a more competitive half in the second, as they created more chances on the offensive end. McLean took two shots in the first six minutes of the half, but both missed the mark.

The Peacocks had an opportunity to tie the game in the 70th minute with their first and only corner kick of the game. The corner resulted in a shot by Weber that ended up wide. Finally, with just three minutes remaining, Ragland scored Saint Peter's first goal of the season in epic fashion as the Peacocks left Philadelphia with a tie.

UP NEXT
The Peacocks will hit the road again this week when they play at Loyola on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
