POMONA, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's baseball team lost a close one to Manhattan at Clover Stadium on Friday, falling in a tight 10-12 game.
The Peacocks (11-29, 5-16 MAAC) started to make a comeback against the Jaspers (16-26, 8-13 MAAC) in the top of the ninth when
Tyler Smith hit a grand-slam, but Manhattan closed out the game with a pop fly on the very next batter.
Tyler DeClusin had a solid game overall with a team-high three hits and four RBIs. Smith was the only Peacock to hit a homer while adding four RBIs to his line.
Garrett Greco,
Ashby Vining and
Tommy Kendrick each recorded two hits on the day. Both of Vining's hits were doubles while Kendrick picked up a triple in the fifth inning.
In just his third game of the season,
James Ellis pitched two innings for Saint Peter's. He didn't allow any runs and held Manhattan to two hits on nine batters faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Peacocks took the lead early with a run by Greco coming on a double from Vining in the top of the first. The Jaspers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at 1-1.
Manhattan went on to score the next six runs to take a 7-1 lead heading into the fourth inning. Saint Peter's cut its deficit to just three after DeClusin recorded a hit to score
Alex Rakas and
Logan Baker and then
Sean Martinez hit a single to score DeClusin.
While trailing 4-7 in the sixth inning, the Peacocks let up a solo homer, making it 4-8. The Jaspers then extended their lead to 10-4 with just two innings left in the game.
In the eighth, DeClusin doubled to left center to score two and bring Saint Peter's back within four at 6-10. Manhattan responded well with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Smith hit a grand-slam, making things interesting for the Peacocks down 10-12. DeClusin then popped up to first as the Jaspers won by two.
