Saint Peter’s Falls To Manhattan In Two Very Tight Games

TEANECK, N.J. – The Saint Peter's baseball team faced two hard defeats against Manhattan at  Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on Sunday. After a rain delay suspended yesterday's game to Sunday, the Peacocks fell 3-4 before Manhattan took the third game as well, 2-1.

The Peacocks (11-31, 5-18 MAAC) lost all three games to the Jaspers (18-26, 10-13 MAAC), however the series was extremely competitive as Saint Peter's lost by a combined four runs.

SPU went through three pitchers in games two and three, seeing Will Paxton, David Delgadillo and Mike DiForte on the mound. At the plate for the Peacocks, Logan Baker recorded three hits while Sean Martinez and Garrett Greco picked up two.

Two of Baker's three hits were doubles as John Wade was the only other Saint Peter's player to hit a double. After this weekend, the Peacocks have just one home series and one road series left in the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME TWO:
Manhattan struck first with a two-run homer in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Peacocks. Saint Peter's responded in the fourth when Baker doubled down the right field line to score Tyler DeClusin.

While trailing just 1-2, the Peacocks surrendered another run in the fifth but, again, responded quickly in the next inning. This time around, Saint Peter's tied things up at 3-3. Baker hit another double to right for his second RBI of the game just before Martinez singled while Baker walked in on a Manhattan error.

Shortly after in the bottom of the seventh, the Jaspers regained the lead with a run on a Saint Peter's double play. The Peacocks trailed 3-4 in the top of the ninth with two outs on the board when rain suspended the game's finish to the next day. Manhattan got the last out and took the second game of the series.

GAME THREE: This time, Saint Peter's got on the board first in the third inning. Tyler Cotten grounded out to shortstop allowing Greco to make it home, putting the Peacocks up 1-0.

Both teams struggled to get on base from there as there was no scoring until the bottom of the ninth inning. Saint Peter's was up 1-0 when the Jaspers hit a double to center field to score two runs and take the lead and the victory.

The Peacocks fell by just one run again, 1-2.

UP NEXT
The Peacocks will be back at home for a three-game series against Mount St. Mary's next weekend while celebrating their senior class.
