NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's University baseball team fell to Iona in a 2-9 game at City Park Friday evening.
The Peacocks (11-36, 5-23 MAAC) had a rough day at the plate as the Gaels (18-33, 12-17 MAAC) held them to just four total hits.
Ashby Vining recorded two of Saint Peter's four hits in his four appearances at bat while
Tyler Smith and
Logan Baker each tallied one hit.
Cam Martindale got the start on the mound and allowed just three runs in six innings pitched. He held Iona to six hits on 29 batters faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Peacocks trailed first as the Gaels brought in three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Shortly after getting hit by a pitch in the fifth,
Ethan Starks made it home on a throwing error by the third baseman while
Ben Williams got on base.
Garrett Greco then hit a sacrifice fly to center field which allowed Williams to score and make it a one-run game at 2-3.
It was in the seventh inning when Iona took charge of the game and started to pull away from the Peacocks. The Gaels rattled off five runs for an 8-2 advantage in the inning as Saint Peter's continued to struggle to produce runs.
Iona held onto its lead and secured a 9-2 victory over SPU.
