NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – In the final game of the regular season, the Saint Peter's University baseball team fell by just one run in an 8-9 game at City Park Saturday afternoon. The Peacocks scored five runs in the ninth inning but they came up just short as the 2025 campaign came to an end.
Despite the loss, the Peacocks (11-37, 5-24 MAAC) totaled four more hits than the Gaels (19-33, 13-17 MAAC) with 13 compared to Iona's nine.
Tyler Smith led Saint Peter's with three hits, two RBIs and two runs on the day. In his other at bat, he took a walk.
Tommy Kendrick and
Ashby Vining each recorded two hits while six other Peacocks notched one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Peacocks took a 2-0 lead right off the bat with two runs in the top of the first. After Kendrick singled to center field, he reached home on a hit by
Logan Baker to score the game's first run. Shortly after, Smith advanced home after a walk with the bases loaded.
Saint Peter's held Iona scoreless for the first two innings before the Gaels took the lead with four runs in the third. From there, the Gaels continued to tack on runs to their total, adding two in the fifth and three in the seventh.
Facing a 2-9 deficit, the Peacocks were left with two more innings to make a comeback. In the eighth, Smith hit a sacrifice fly to left field while
Ethan Starks scored, making it 3-9.
Things got interesting in the ninth inning as Saint Peter's forced two Iona pitching changes after five straight runs to come within one at 8-9. Facing two outs with Vining on third,
Alex Manent was at the plate. After a strike, two fouls and two balls, Manent hit a ball to right center but it was caught by the right fielder as the Gaels won by one.
