NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's University baseball team lost, 3-10, to Iona at City Park Thursday afternoon, leaving just two regular season games remaining.
After the Peacocks (11-35, 5-22 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Gaels (17-33, 11-17 MAAC) scored seven unanswered runs over the next two innings which was too much for Saint Peter's to come back from.
Despite the defeat,
Hunter Lefkus had a solid day on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing just four hits.
Tommy Kendrick,
Tyler Smith and
Sean Martinez each recorded two hits but it all amounted to just one RBI.
Ben Williams hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning which was the highlight of the day for the Peacocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Peacocks struck first to open the game with a 1-0 lead. After Kendrick hit a double, Smith singled down the left field line as Kendrick made it to home plate.
After the 1-0 start over the Gaels, Saint Peter's surrendered seven straight runs over the next two innings. Iona scored four in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the second.
The Gaels continued to pile onto their lead to make it a 10-1 game heading into the final inning. The Peacocks came within seven after Williams hit a two-run homer to make it 3-10 in the ninth, but that was all Saint Peter's could produce.
UP NEXT
The Peacocks will play their final two games of the season against Iona on Friday at 5 p.m. ET and Saturday at 12 p.m.
