NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's baseball team fell to Niagara in both games of a doubleheader Friday at Bobo Field. The Peacocks struggled in the first game with a 0-12 score but fought hard in the second game, ultimately losing 3-4.
In the two games, the Peacocks (7-18, 3-8 MAAC) totaled eight hits compared to the Purple Eagles' (7-15, 3-5 MAAC) 22 hits. Saint Peter's committed three errors in the first game, but improved in the second game with zero.
Logan Baker and
Tommy Kendrick each recorded two hits over both games. Kendrick also had an RBI in game two while
Ashby Vining and
Alex Rakas brought in runs as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE: The Peacocks went down big early in the game, allowing six runs in the first inning. They then had relatively quick stints in the batter's box in the second and third innings as they had trouble putting runs on the board.
Niagara extended its lead to 11-0 with five more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Once the Purple Eagles were up 12-0, Saint Peter's put
Zach Frasher on the mound who fared well. He pitched three innings for the Peacocks and allowed just three hits and no runs.
Saint Peter's didn't manage to score a run in the first game as it fell 0-12.
GAME TWO: The Peacocks got off to a way better start in the second game of the day, wasting no time putting a run up on the board.
Garrett Greco and Kendrick got on base to give Saint Peter's a chance at an early lead.
The Peacocks did just that after
Tyler DeClusin hit a sacrifice bunt to bring Greco home.
Will Paxton was dealing through the first few innings. He went through just 10 at bats going into the bottom of the fourth.
Saint Peter's led 2-0 after Vining doubled to left center which brought Kendrick home from second base. In the bottom of the fourth, Niagara managed to tie the game at 2-2.
The Purple Eagles then took their first lead of the game at 3-2 in the sixth inning after
Mike DiForte entered the game for SPU. Niagara hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead.
The Peacocks had one more chance to tie the game or take the lead, but they could only score one run in the top of the ninth. The run belonged to
Luke Schwartz who made it to home plate on a double from Rakas.
