Making History: Peacocks Defeat Mount St. Mary’s for the First Time Since 1992

JERSEY CITY, NJ -  Saint Peter's women's basketball defeated Mount St. Mary's by a score of 70-54 on Thursday night in their Play4Kay game. Laila Grant, Linda Amaning and Fatmata Janneh all scored in double figures. 
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Peter's came out strong, setting the tone early as graduate guard Laila Grant drilled a three-pointer to open the scoring. Redshirt sophomore Nikola Zdenkova followed it up by banking in a shot, while sophomore Fatmata Janneh attacked the rim, extending the Peacocks' lead to 8-0. Freshman Linda Amaning added a smooth layup, and Grant connected on another triple to keep the momentum rolling. Zdenkova then struck from beyond the arc, helping Saint Peter's close out an impressive first quarter with a 22-13 advantage.

Heading into the second quarter, Laila Grant stayed hot from beyond the arc by sinking back-to-back three-pointers. Freshman Linda Amaning powered her way to the basket for a strong finish, while Zdenkova responded with another deep three. Freshman De'Naya Rippey added to the momentum with a smooth layup, and Janneh closed out the half with another drive to the rim, sending Saint Peter's into the break with a commanding 45-22 lead.

After halftime, junior guard Louella Allana knocked down a three-pointer to keep the Peacocks rolling, followed by a strong layup from Janneh. Amaning continued to dominate inside, driving to the basket for back-to-back layups, adding to Saint Peter's offensive momentum. By the end of the third quarter, Saint Peter's maintained full control, extending their lead to 58-28.

In the Peacocks' final stretch, Janneh powered to the basket, adding another strong finish to extend Saint Peter's commanding lead. Janneh followed up with a smooth jumper, while Rippey capitalized in the paint, further adding to Saint Peter's dominant performance. The Peacocks secured a historic victory, defeating Mount St. Mary's for the first time since 1992 and their first win over the Mountaineers since they joined the MAAC in 2021-22. 
 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Laila Grant had an outstanding performance in the game, playing a total of 38 minutes. She shot efficiently, going six-of-12 from the field, with an impressive 50% shooting from both the field and beyond the arc. She grabbed four rebounds (all defensive), dished out three assists, and recorded one steal. Grant finished with 18 points, showing great efficiency and contributing a lot to her team's offense.

Amaning delivered a dominant performance in 27 minutes of play. She was highly efficient, shooting eight-of-nine from the field for an impressive 88.9% shooting percentage. She grabbed nine rebounds, including three offensive boards and six defensive rebounds, showcasing her versatility and hustle. 

Janneh had a standout performance in 36 minutes of play, finishing with 17 points. She shot six-of-13 from the field for 46.2% and was solid from the free-throw line, going five-of-six for 83.3%. Janneh had  an incredible 15 rebounds, including three offensive and 12 defensive boards. She also showcased her playmaking skills with nine assists, although she had eight turnovers.
