SAN ANTONIO – The Saint Peter's baseball team secured its first win of the season Sunday afternoon after taking down Incarnate Word in an 8-5 game at Sullivan Field.
Saint Peter's (1-3) was trailing the Cardinals (3-1) by one run heading into the ninth, but the Peacocks found a way to double their score to take the three-run victory.
Both teams had a hard time reaching home plate in the first two innings before the Peacocks got on the board first in the third. Saint Peter's scored with a single from
Ashby Vining that brought in
Tommy Kendrick. Incarnate Word wasted no time tying the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the inning.
The tie continued into the fifth inning, but
Luke Schwartz scored on a flyout from Vining to regain the lead for the Peacocks. Saint Peter's led by one entering the top of the seventh before
Tyler Cotten hit a double to right field to bring Kendrick home. Vining extended the SPU lead to three in his third at bat, hitting a single as Cotten rounded third to make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Incarnate Word made it very interesting, rattling off four runs to take its first lead of the game. Saint Peter's escaped the inning after
Lance Mittelman came in and struck out Incarnate Word's Ryder Hernandez.
Garrett Greco advanced Schwartz to second base in the ninth with a groundout to the pitcher. Schwartz then scored the tying run at 5-5 after Kendrick hit a line drive single to center field. With two outs, the Cardinals intentionally walked Vining which brought
Logan Baker to the plate. Baker delivered in the clutch with a double to left field that sent Kendrick and Vining home.
Ben Williams then recorded an RBI as Baker put the Peacocks up 8-4.
Williams then went to the mound to finish things off in San Antonio. He forced a flyout from his first batter before striking out the next two as the Peacocks won a thriller at Sullivan Field.
Ethan Starks led the team with three hits, followed by Greco, Vining and Kendrick who each had two. Vining also recorded three RBIs and finished the weekend with two home runs.
Saint Peter's next game will take place on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET when it takes on Villanova on the road.
