NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Saint Peter's volleyball team (7-20, 2-14 MAAC) put up a good fight against Merrimack (9-16, 7-9 MAAC), but ultimately fell in a full five-set match (24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 15-25, 12-15) on Saturday at Hammel Court.
The Peacocks held the Warriors to under .200 hitting, but it wasn't enough as Merrimack pulled through in five.
Valeria Pagan Munoz and
Sibana Gonzalez Acevedo both recorded double-doubles in the match. Pagan Munoz tallied 13 kills and 16 digs while Gonzalez Acevedo finished with 11 kills and 10 digs.
Liz Reyes Pagan also had a solid showing, playing in all five sets and totaling the second most digs on the team with 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After dropping the first set to the Warriors in extra points, the Peacocks rallied back on the road, winning the next two sets. In the third, Saint Peter's won handily, 25-15. The Peacocks' offensive attack was laser-focused as the SPU hitters finished the set with a .324 hitting percentage.
In set four, several scoring runs made by the Warriors late in the set propelled Merrimack to a 25-15 victory while forcing a fifth and final set. The Peacocks and Warriors basically traded points to a 6-6 tie to start the deciding set before Merrimack gained some separation with three unanswered points.
Saint Peter's forced Merrimack into an attack error which brought the Peaocks within just one at 11-12. Despite the strong effort by SPU, the Warriors ended the set with three kills to take it, 15-12.
UP NEXT
The Peacocks return to Jersey City for their last two games of the season. They host Marist on Friday, Nov. 14, and Siena on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Senior Day ceremony is scheduled to take place prior to the start of the Siena match.
