Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – Saint Peter's University women's basketball sophomore Fatmata Janneh delivered another dominant performance, scoring 25 points and hauling in 21 rebounds to lead the Peacocks past NJIT 65-60 in a hard-fought non-conference contest. Freshman De'Naya Rippey added 12 points, including a pair of timely three-pointers, to help power the Peacocks to victory.
WHAT HAPPENED
The game began with strong defensive pressure from the Peacocks. Junior guard Louella Allana picked off a steal, setting up Janneh for a quick basket in the paint. Janneh then scored again on a fast break, while sophomore guard Emily O'Connell followed up with a driving layup. Graduate guard Maya Hyacienth drained a three-pointer, followed by Janneh hitting another long-range shot to keep the game tied at 14-14 heading into the second quarter.
Graduate guard Laila Grant opened the second period with a three-pointer, followed by a driving layup that gave the Peacocks an early five-point surge. Janneh continued her strong play, driving to the basket, and freshman forward Linda Amaning added a layup of her own. Despite the hot start from the Peacocks, a late surge left the Highlanders on top 27-24 at the half.
The Peacocks came out strong in the third quarter, with redshirt sophomore Nikola Zdenkova knocking down a three-pointer. Janneh added a layup, while Zdenkova hit two more from beyond the arc. Janneh also connected on a pair of free throws to give Saint Peter's a 41-37 lead going into the final quarter. Zdenkova finished the third shooting 3-of-4 from three-point range.
In the closing minutes, Janneh and Rippey helped secure the lead. Janneh hit a jumper off an assist from Allana, while Rippey converted a layup and hit a pair of free throws. Janneh then scored back-to-back layups, and Rippey added two more three-pointers to seal the win.
STATISTICS
Janneh shot 47.8% from the field and posted an impressive 25 points along with 21 rebounds, while Rippey was efficient from beyond the arc, hitting 66.6% of her three-point attempts to finish with 12 points and eight rebounds.
NEXT UP
The Peacocks continue the regular season with a non-conference match-up on Sunday, Dec. 8, when they take on the University of Pittsburgh. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ACCN/ESPN+.
