NEWARK, DE. (April 8, 2022) - The Saint Peter's University baseball team used a four-run inning to take an early lead, but could not hold the lead as the University of Delaware took home a 12-4 win over the Peacocks Friday night at Bob Hannah Stadium.

- Junior Sam Haney had the biggest hit of the night for SPU with a two-RBI double in the top of the third to give the Peacocks their first and only lead of the contest.
- Sophomores Jack Eichler and Collin Jensen both drove in single runs thanks to back-to-back RBI fielder's choice opportunities in the third to tie the game.
- Sophomore Parker Gray and graduate student Tom Buckman joined Haney and Jensen in the hit column for the Peacocks to give SPU four in the game. Gray and Buckman also both scored a run in the game as did junior Nick Markantonatos.
- Sophomore Robert Black III had a strong outing in relief tossing 2.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run.
How it Happened
- The Blue Hens got on the board first immediately in the bottom half of the first when the leadoff hitter lifted a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right center.
- Delaware tacked on another in the frame on an error to take a 2-0 lead into the second.
- The Peacocks jumped ahead with a four-run third as Gray led the inning off with a triple and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Eichler.
- Buckman, who reached on an error earlier in the inning, then came home to tie things up at two on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Jensen.
- With the bases loaded and one away, Haney delivered the big blow for the Peacocks with a two-RBI double into the gap to give SPU a 4-2 lead.
- The Blue Hens answered with a single run in the bottom of the fourth on a single, a steal and another single to make the score 4-3.
- The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Delaware exploded for a five-run inning highlighted by a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch to score another and a two-RBI double to give the Blue Hens an 8-4 edge.
- In the bottom of the seventh, UD tacked on another with an RBI single and then pushed the tally to double figures with a three spot in the eighth fueled by back-to-back RBI triples to grab the 12-4 victory.
From the Dugout (Head Coach Lou Proietti)
- "We battled the first half of the game but weren't able to finish. We need to minimize big innings on defense and do a better job of creating runs throughout the game. Hopefully we can come out and compete tomorrow."
Up Next
- Game two of the series will take place Saturday at 3:00 pm in Newark as SPU will look to even the series.
