JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team beat Marist by a score of 58-45 Sunday afternoon in Run Baby Run Arena. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams led the team in scoring with 23 points as she became the 24th Peacock in history to score 1,000 points.
Williams got her day going with the first basket of the game just over a minute into the first quarter. Junior center Kassondra Brown quickly followed that up with a layup and the Peacocks had a 4-0 lead early. Points were hard to come by for either team, but senior guard Binta Salawu was able to make two three-pointers over the course of the final 3:18 of the quarter. The Peacocks held a slim 14-9 lead after one.
Marist cut the lead to two with 6:43 left on the clock in the second quarter, but the deficit never got smaller the rest of the way. Senior guard Kourtney Crane and Salawu answered by each scoring a basket of their own. The Peacocks largest lead of the quarter was ten after two free throws by Williams with a little over a minute to go before the half, but the Red Foxes cut it to seven, 26-19, going into the break.
Saint Peter's opened the second half on a 13-0 run to put Marist in the rear view. The trio of Williams, Crane, and Brown would combine to score all 13. Williams made two threes in the quarter as she inched closer to the 1,000 career point mark. Saint Peter's led by 17 entering the fourth quarter.
Williams finally got her moment with 3:28 left on the game clock in the fourth quarter. After senior guard Nickelle O'Neil poked the ball away, sophomore forward Sky Castro was able to pick it up and found Williams, who went coast-to-coast for the lay-in. Already reaching the 2,000 career point mark earlier this season in the first contest with Canisius, Williams now becomes number 24 to score 1,000 at Saint Peter's. The Peacocks would hold off the Red Foxes in the end, avenging their 2021 MAAC Championship loss.
