Women’s Basketball Drops First MAAC Contest at Quinnipiac Thursday Night

HAMDEN, C.T. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team was defeated by Quinnipiac by a score of 79-66 Thursday night in the People's United Center. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams led the team in scoring with 25 and four made threes.

Quinnipiac opened the game on a 11-0 scoring run. The Peacocks didn't make a field goal until the 4:15 mark of the quarter, as Williams made a three from the corner to make the score 16-7 Bobcats. Williams would go on to make another bucket and senior guard Tyara McQueen added one as well to finish out the first for the Peacocks. Quinnipiac held a 22-11 lead.

Sophomore forward Victoria Ikenasio provided a spark off of the bench for Saint Peter's in the second quarter. She scored the opening five points to cut the Bobcat lead to six. The Peacocks exploded for 21 points in the quarter, led by Williams with 10 and 15 overall in the first half. Saint Peter's trailed 32-21 with five minutes to go in the quarter before going on a 11-0 run of their own to tie the game up, capped by a McQueen three from the right wing. Saint Peter's trailed 37-32 at the half.

Following the break, freshman forward Kaila Dawkins scored a bucket to get the Peacocks going, but the Bobcats would take control after that. They would follow the Dawkins bucket with an 8-0 run before McQueen hit from deep. Quinnipiac followed that shot with a 7-0 run to open up a big lead. The Bobcats led by 18 at the end of the quarter.

Needed to grind out a comeback in the fourth quarter, Williams got the Peacocks going with four straight points from the line. Dawkins would follow that up with back-to-back buckets to cut the Bobcat lead to 14. However, the MAAC Preseason Favorites were able to sure things up down the stretch to take the 79-66 victory.
