Whitley Scores First Career Goal; Women’s Soccer Falls to Lafayette

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University women's soccer team lost to Lafayette College by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Senior forward Amber Whitley scored her first career goal for the Peacocks.

Game Notes:

  • The first half was lively with chances for both teams, including an opportunity for freshman forward Julianna Jatkola that she fired wide in the eighth minute on a great feed from freshman midfielder Lula Mansilla Medina.
  • Freshman midfielder Sydney Watson tested the Lafayette keeper in the 18th minute from close range but the chance was saved. The half finished at 0-0.
  • The Leopards came out of halftime with a fury, scoring in the 56th minute and also the 62nd minute to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Lafayette was issued a red card in the 65th minute. They finished the last 25 minutes with 10 players
  • Whitley scored in the 88th minute to bring the Peacocks within one, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and powering it past the keeper, who got a deflection on it.
  • Despite the Leopards being down a player, the Peacocks could not generate another goal and fell to Lafayette 2-1.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Peacocks registered 11 shots, with Jatkola leading the way with three, and Whitley and senior defender Fatou Doucoure right behind her with two.
  • Watson, Whitley, and senior midfielders Skyler Owens and Jessica Auvil each registered a shot on goal.
  • Freshman goalie Annabelle Adams made four saves in the game.
Coach's Quotes - Julia Bazi:
  • Today was a tough one to take, we should have been up early on.
  • We worked on defending set pieces all week so to give a goal away on a set piece again was disappointing.
  • We did fight back and put ourselves in a good position to get a result but unfortunately it wasn't our day.
Up Next:
The Peacocks hit the road again on Sunday, September 12, as they visit Sacred Heart for a 1 p.m. kickoff
