NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team lost to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights by a score of 59-38 Tuesday night in Jersey Mike's Arena. Graduate guard Kendrea Williams led the team with ten points.
Both teams came out slow, as neither team was able to score in the first two minutes. After two Rutgers free-throws to open the scoring, Williams made a three-pointer for the Peacocks first basket and lead of the season. The Peacocks finished with seven points in the quarter.
Senior guard Tyara McQueen banked in a jumper to get the Peacocks going in the second quarter. Senior guard Kourtney Crane recorded two steals in the quarter and nailed a jumper to pace the Peacocks in the second. The Peacocks trailed 24-13 at the half as Salawu nailed two free-throws to finish the half.
Saint Peter's went on a 13-2 run midway through the third quarter. On that run, Williams made five free-throws, and then sophomore guard Rachel Kuhl made a bucket and took the contact. She followed that up by hitting a jumper on the next possession. Sophomore forward Sky Castro then made a layup to get the Peacocks back to within five.
The Peacocks fought hard and didn't quit, forcing more Rutgers turnovers down the stretch. Despite the effort, they weren't able to generate enough offense, dropping the contest in New Brunswick.
