Women’s Basketball Drops Nail-Biter to Morgan State

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team lost to the Morgan State Lady Bears by a score of 66-62 Monday night in Run Baby Run Arena. The game was close throughout, as neither team was able to take more than an eight point lead.

Junior center Kassondra Brown got things going early in this one for the Peacocks. She scored the opening basket for the third straight game, and ended the first quarter with seven points. The Peacocks lead grew to as many as six in the quarter, but the Lady Bears cut it down to just one by the end of the frame. Senior guard Binta Salawu scored the final three points of the quarter for the Peacocks at the free throw line.

The score remained tight in what was a low scoring second quarter for both teams. The Lady Bears won the quarter 12-11 to tie things up going into halftime. Sophomore guard Rachel Kuhl hit a three and senior guard Kourtney Crane scored four to lead the Peacocks in the second.

It was the Peacocks who came out of the halftime break looking the better side. The team held the lead for just over the first six minutes of the third quarter, but the Lady Bears wouldn't go away, taking the lead before relinquishing it back to the Peacocks by the end of the quarter. It was a three headed attack shown by the Peacocks, courtesy of Brown, Crane, and sophomore forward Victoria Ikenasio. The three combined for 15 of the 17 Saint Peter's points in the frame.

After trading buckets for most of the fourth quarter, Morgan State took the lead with 2:50 left in the fourth quarter and never looked back. The Lady Bears went on a 6-0 run between the 2:50 mark and the :49 second mark. Despite missing multiple free throws down the stretch, Morgan State was able to hold on and gave the Peacocks their third straight loss.
