Brown Has Career Night; Women’s Basketball Earns First Win of the Season Wednesday Night against Wagner

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team beat the Wagner Seahawks by a score of 66-57 Wednesday night at Run Baby Run Arena. Junior center Kassondra Brown had a career high 22 points and a career high 16 rebounds to lead the Peacocks.

Both teams kept the score close through the first quarter, with the Peacocks coming away with a point lead. Brown got going early, scoring six in the frame.

The second quarter was filled with mini-runs by each team. The Peacocks went on a 4-0 run early in the quarter courtesy of two Brown free throws and a lay-in by sophomore forward Sky Castro to push the lead to four. Senior guard Tyara McQueen went on a 5-0 run of her own towards the end of the quarter, hitting a long two and drilling a three to bring the Peacocks to within one. The score was tied at 25 a-piece at halftime after sophomore guard Rachel Kuhl made three free throws.

Coming out of the half, senior guard Binta Salawu started to get going from the field for Saint Peter's. She scored eight points in the quarter. She first got it going by hitting an uncontested three with 6:40 left to go in the third. On the next possession, she got a steal and went coast-to-coast, making the layup while drawing the contact. She would go on to make the free throw to cap off her own 6-0 run. The Peacocks trailed the Seahawks by one at the end of the third.

Brown was a major force for the Peacocks all night, but she started to wear down the Wagner defense in the fourth quarter. She recorded six of her 16 rebounds in the fourth, as well as scoring eight points. Wagner had trouble guarding Brown all night, and she took advantage of that, en route to her career night. The Peacocks were able to hold off Wagner down the stretch by making their free throws, claiming their first win of the 2021-22 campaign.
