Baseball Falls in Final Contest at LIU

Peacocks drop third game 5-2

BROOKEVILLE, NY – The Saint Peter's baseball team dropped the third and final contest of a trio of games at LIU, falling 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks fell in all three games of the series this week, dropping the team's overall record to 1-14 this season.

How it Happened
  • Saint Peter's put its first two batters on in the first inning. Anthony Ramos got on with a single through the right side, followed by a drawn walk from Hunter Mason.
  • After the two leadoff hitters reached, the next three batters were retired, keeping the Peacocks off the board.
  • Saint Peter's kept LIU scoreless in response during the bottom portion of the inning.
  • Neither side scored in the second.
  • In the third, the Peacocks had a huge opportunity for runs. Three of the Peacocks first four hitters singled in the inning to load the bases with one out --- Joey Vitiello, Mason, and John Gavura all reached. Unfortunately, the inning ended with no runs.
  • Ironically, in the home half of the third, LIU turned two hits into four runs.
  • Saint Peter's found success in the fourth, opening the inning with a leadoff double from Andrew Veit. Then with two outs, Vitiello singled to center field, driving home Veit.
  • The scoring stalled over the next three innings, keeping the Peacocks in a 4-1 hole.
  • Veit cut Saint Peter's deficit in half, reaching home on a wild pitch in the eighth.
  • LIU added an insurance run in the eighth to answer, extending the lead to 5-2.
  • Attempting a comeback, the Peacocks got two batters to reach base, but again failed to bring the runners home, ending the game in the three-run defeat.

Inside the Numbers
  • This was the second time in the season that Saint Peter's reached double-figures in hits, finishing with 10 on the day. Although the team was successful getting on, the Peacocks left 12 total runners on base in the defeat.
  • Gavura led the way with a team-leading three hits on five at bats, while Ramos and Vitiello eached put two in play.
  • Right-handed pitcher Joe Albunia (0-3) received the decision.

Coach's Quotes – Lou Proietti
  • "Our pitchers did a good job keeping us in the game."
  • "We were unable to come up with a big hit when we needed it. We had runners on first and second with no one out and we were unable to score in the first.
  • "Unfortunately that set the tone for the rest of the game."

On Deck
  • Saint Peter's will remain close to home, traveling to Queens, NY for a date with St. John's on Tuesday (Mar. 10).
