Baseball Falls on Opening Day to No. 19 Georgia Tech

Peacocks fall 6-0 to the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets

ATLANTA, GA – The Saint Peter's baseball team fell on opening day, 6-0, to No. 19 Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon in Atlanta.

The Opener
  • With two down in the opening inning, Saint Peter's captain Hunter Mason hit a single to center field to get the team's first hit of the 2020 season. Mason then advanced to second on a passed ball. John Guavara would draw a walk on four balls and Mason advanced to third on a passed ball. Nicholas Sciubba followed with a walk to load the bases in the inning. Unfortunately, Jesse Matos popped up in the infield to end the inning with three on.
  • In the bottom half of the frame, starting pitcher Ian Concevitch gave up a single to the leadoff hitter, but the Peacocks defense retired the next three batters to keep the game scoreless through one.
  • Georgia Tech would score four runs over the next three in innings, taking a 4-0 lead into the fifth.
  • Both teams would fail to put runs up in the fifth and sixth innings and the Peacocks allowed two more runs in the seventh for the final score of 6-0.

Inside the Numbers
  • Saint Peter's earned three hits against the national power house.
  • Nicholas Sciubba reached base three times in the game, going 1-for-1 with a single and earning two walks.
  • Hunter Mason (1-for-4) and John Gavura (1-for-3) each added a hit in the contest.
  • Right-handed pitcher Concevitch got the starting nod in his return to his home-state of Georgia, going 4.2 innings and giving up seven hits for four earned runs.

Coach's Quotes – Lou Proietti
  • "I thought our pitchers did a good job throwing strikes and our defense responded and made all the plays."
  • "Offensively we had a couple quality at bats but we have to do a better job with two strikes. We took too many third strikes so hopefully we can make an adjustment moving forward."
  • "I was happy with our effort and focus, hopefully we can learn from today and come out tomorrow ready to play."

On Deck
  • Saint Peter's will remain in Georgia, traveling to Kennesaw St. for a meeting with Kennesaw St. on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
