Opening Word:
- The Saint Peter's University women's basketball team returns to Jersey City this weekend for its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) home-opening series against Canisius from Dec. 19-20. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.
- The games against the Golden Griffins mark the first home stretch for the Peacocks since their season opener against NJIT on Nov. 25.
- During their last time out, the Peacocks swept the Iona Gaels to start the season 2-0, defeating their MAAC opponents 63-54 on Dec. 12, and then 45-38 on Dec. 13.
- Redshirt senior Kendrea Williams dropped a season-high 21 points in the initial matchup, while junior Binta Salawu took the reins on Dec. 13, leading the Peacocks in scoring with her own season high of 14 points.
History with the Golden Griffins:
- Saint Peter's and Canisius have met on the court 66 times prior to this weekend's series. The Peacocks are nearly level with the Golden Griffins all-time, holding a 32-34 record against the team from Buffalo.
- Last year, Saint Peter's swept Canisius in the regular season, first taking a commanding 86-68 win on the road on Jan. 25, followed up by a 67-58 home victory less than a month later on Feb. 15.
- The Peacocks tied the MAAC three-point record last year against the Golden Griffins in Buffalo, finishing the game with 16 made shots from beyond the arc, and were led by Williams who tallied six triples in the exchange.
- Prior to last season's Jan. 25 win, the Peacocks' last victory over the Golden Griffins was on the road in a 74-65 decision on Feb. 7, 2013, and the last home win for the Peacocks in the series before last season was on Feb. 12, 2012 by a 66-51 margin.
Season-Opening Sweep:
- At the moment, the Saint Peter's men's and women's basketball teams each hold MAAC records of 2-0, and the Peacocks stand as the only program in the conference to finish the opening weekend of conference play with sweeps from both the men and women.
- The two wins from each program signify the first season since the 1996-97 ledger in which both the Saint Peter's men's and women's teams have started MAAC play 2-0.
- The wins also represent the first time in head coach Marc Mitchell's tenure that the Peacocks have starter conference play 2-0.
