Box Score // Highlights // Fernandez Postgame Interview

JERSEY CITY, NJ
- The Saint Peter's women's soccer team opened its 2019 season with a dominant 3-1 victory at home over Delaware State. Junior Isabel Fernandez, sophomore Skyler Owens, and freshman Madison Greenberg were all able to find the back of the net in Friday night's victory.

Game Notes

  • Owens started things off for the Peacocks, finding the net early with a strike from 25 yards out just under the '10, putting the home squad ahead 1-0. That lead went unchanged through the remainder of the opening stanza.
  • In the second half, Fernandez was able to put the ball in the upper left corner off a one-timer at '55, after receiving an assist from Julianna Murrill across the middle.
  • Greenberg extended the Peacocks' lead to three nil when she hit the dagger for the Peacocks in the 61st minute after a solo break up the middle and slotting the ball after a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper.
  • Delaware State's Savannah Ay put one on the board for the Hornets in the 68th minute by way of a header that went past Peacock keeper Victoria Scarratt after she left the box to challenge the shot attempt.
Inside the Numbers
  • Friday's win marks the team's first season-opening win at home in program history.
  • The victory also stands as the first season-opener victory since 2009, when Saint Peter's defeated Wagner College 2-0 in New York.
  • The three tallies scored by the Peacocks are the most scored in a single game for the team since September 8, 2017, when the women defeated Hampton University 5-1.
  • Scarratt recorded four saves on the night as part of an impressive performance in net.
  • Both Owens and Greenberg begin the season with a goal apiece, along with perfect shot percentages.
Coach's Quotes - Melissa Sherwood
  • "We are very pleased to get off to a winning start. I am also happy that we scored three goals, and had three different goal scorers."
  • "Some decent individual performances, particularly debuts. This is a good platform to build from but we must continue to get better."
  • "We can play better than we showed tonight even though we got the job done."
  • "Also we are happy to start off 1-0 for the first time in 10 years and we want to keep breaking records here this season."
Up Next
  • The Peacocks remain at home as they prepare to take on Hampton University on Wednesday, August 28 at Joseph J. Jaroschak Field in Jersey City.
