Victory Over Hampton Catapults Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Start

Peacocks begin the season with best record in 25 years

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's women's soccer team remains perfect at home and on the season, after defeating Hampton University 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman midfielder, Madison Greenberg, scored the game winning goal in the 59th minute.

Game Notes
  • Junior goalkeeper Victoria Scarratt was active early, recording seven stops in the first half.
  • Despite the Lady Pirates ball control and nine shots in the opening 45', the Peacocks never surrendered a goal.
  • The Peacocks were able to get one shot off in the first half, when a pass was sent into the box to Jessica Auvil, who was one-on-one with the Hampton goalie, but the shot was sent directly at the keeper for an easy save.
  • The game shifted in the second half when Greenberg's goal came on a solo breakaway, sending the ball into the bottom left corner of the net 15 minutes in.
  • Through the game's final 30 minutes, Scarratt and Saint Peter's back line would ultimately preserve the 1-0 lead and secure the shutout victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • The Peacocks now stand at 2-0 for the first time since 1994, when the Peacocks defeated Lafayette 3-1 and Lehigh 2-0 to start the season.
  • The victory also marks the first time since 1996 that the Saint Peter's women's soccer team has started off 2-0 at home.
  • The goal by Greenberg is her second in as many games, and she currently holds a perfect shot percentage through two matches.
  • Scarratt's 11 saves are the most the junior has had since playing Hampton on September 9, 2017, when she also recorded 11 stops.
  • It was the fourth game in Scarratt's collegiate career in which the keeper has recorded double-digit saves in a single game.
Coach's Quotes - Melissa Sherwood
  • "We made hard work of it today, we didn't play to the best of our ability, particularly in the first half, but we did enough to get the goal and see the game out in the second."
  • "Although we're not too pleased with the performance today, we are thrilled with the result and to go 2-0 for the first time in 25 years is an achievement for this program."
  • "I'm also happy that we managed to keep the first clean sheet of the season too and dig in defensively once we went ahead."
Up Next
  • The Peacocks hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Newark to face off against NJIT on Saturday, August 31 at 1 p.m.
