Baseball’s Ninth Inning Comeback Attempt at St. John’s Falls Just Short

The Peacocks dropped Tuesday’s game at St. John’s 7-5

QUEENS, NY – The Peacock baseball team put together a ninth inning rally that came up just two runs shorts on Tuesday afternoon at St. John's. Saint Peter's would go on to drop the non-conference meeting, 7-5.

Game Notes
  • The Peacocks defense forced St. John's into a 1-2-3 first inning, and followed that up with a no hit second inning.
  • Hunter Mason produced the game's first run in the top of the third, with a RBI single to right field.
  • Peter Ferony followed up in the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to right field that cleared the way for a tag up by Nicholas Sciubba at third base to come home for the second score of the inning.
  • St. John's added a run in the bottom half of the inning after an error and sacrifice fly.
  • The Peacocks again held St. John's without a hit in the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead into inning number five.
  • Using a combination of four pitchers through four innings, Saint Peter's held St. John's hitless over the four innings stretch, and without a run through two innings, and to just one run (unearned) through the four innings.
  • Leading by one run entering the bottom of the fifth, the Peacocks gave up a trio of hits and allowed three runs by St. John's to fall behind 4-2.
  • The score remained at 4-2 until the seventh inning when St. John's added three more insurance runs to extend its lead over Saint Peter's to 7-2.
  • In the top of the ninth, with one last shot at a comeback, Saint Peter's began a late game rally.
  • With one out and two on, Andrew Connor hit a single to right field to load the bases.
  • John Gavura was then hit by a pitch, to walk in run number three and keep the bases loaded.
  • Trent Koerner came to the plate next and sent a shot up the middle for two more runs that cut the Peacock deficit to 7-5 with one out and the game-tying runner in scoring position.
  • Unfortunately, the next two Peacock batters could not deliver the necessary hits, as a fielder's choice and strike out ended the Peacocks chances at an upset comeback win.

Inside the Numbers
  • Koerner had the best day at the plate for Saint Peter's, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Gavura, Ferony and Mason each delivered one RBI.
  • The Peacocks' runs were scored by Sciubba, Jared Quintero, Anthony Ramos, and Connor.
  • The Peacocks used a total of eight pitchers through the eight innings of defense, with no pitcher going for more than 1.1 innings.
  • The octet of Peacock pitchers combined for five strikeouts and only allowed 4 of the 7 St. John's runs.
Coach's Quotes – Danny Ramirez
  • "Our guys continued to play well today at St. John's and we were leading through four innings."
  • "A couple of walks and hit batters in the 5th and 7th opened the door for St. John's and they took full advantage scoring three runs in each of those innings."
  • "Our guys didn't quit and came back to score three runs late to make it 7-5 and had the tying run on base before making the last out of the game."
  • "They fought hard and had great energy. If they keep playing like that they will be fine."
