Baseball Plays Quinnipiac to the Wire in Twin Bill on Sunday

The Peacocks fell 5-4 and 2-0 in the two contests

HAMDEN, CT – The Peacocks played in two tightly contested games against Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, but ultimately fell in both games of the doubleheader. Saint Peter's dropped the games, 5-4 (7 innings) and 2-0.
 
Game 1 Notes
  • The Peacocks started the game with no hits while Quinnipiac put three runs on the scoreboard through two innings.
  • Saint Peter's starting pitcher, Ryan Wappaus buckled down and kept Quinnipiac off the board in the third and fourth innings, striking out two and holding the Bobcats to just one hit over the two innings.
  • Still trailing 3-0, the Peacocks made a run in the top of the fifth inning, knotting the game with a three-run rally.
  • With two outs, Anthony Ramos got on base by a walk.
  • Nicolas Sciubba came to the plate next and hit a single to center field putting two on.
  • Chris Marquart batted in the first run, hitting a single to right field that scored Ramos and advanced Sciubba to third.
  • Down 3-1, Hunter Mason doubled to right field for two RBIs, sending home both Sciubba and Marquart to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The Peacocks came close to scoring the go-ahead run but following a single by Edwin Feliciano, Mason was thrown out at home plate to end the inning.
  • Quinnipiac responded with a two-run inning in the home half of the fifth, to regain the lead at 5-3.
  • In the top of the sixth, Jared Paladino's RBI double to left center scored Peter Ferony to put the Peacocks behind 5-4.
  • A 1-2-3 bottom half of the sixth inning by Peacock reliever, Steve Epstein, sent Saint Peter's into the final inning trailing by just one run.
  • Leadoff hitter, Sciubba, got on base after being hit by a pitch, putting him in scoring position to tie the game.
  • The next three Peacock batters were retired, ending the hopes of a comeback win, with Saint Peter's falling 5-4.
 
Game 2 Notes
  • The second game was powered by the defense.
  • Both teams remained scoreless through the first seven innings.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning, Quinnipiac was able to put two runs up to take a 2-0 lead over Saint Peter's.
  • The Peacocks' side was retired in the ninth inning to end the game.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • In game one, the Peacocks outhit the Bobcats 7-6.
  • Feliciano led Saint Peter's with two hits, going 2 for 4 in the first contest.
  • Mason was the team leader with two RBIs, while Paladino and Marquart each had one RBI.
