NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team fell to Iona, 61-57 on Sunday afternoon. The team was down 25 points in the first half and made a comeback in the second half, coming all the way to within two points.
Zoe Pero notched a career-high 27 points against the Gaels.
Game Notes vs. Iona:
- The Peacocks started the game off with a quick 5-0 lead.
- Iona responded with a 20-2 run against the Peacocks, going into the second quarter up 20-7.
- In the second quarter, Iona jumped out to their largest lead of the game at 25 points.
- Pero scored 11 of the Peacocks' 13 points in the second quarter, and Saint Peter's went into halftime trailing Iona, 37-20.
- The Peacocks began their comeback in the second half when the team started a 9-2 run, beginning to cut Iona's lead.
- In the final two minutes, Cinnamon Dockery sank two free throws to shorten the lead to nine points.
- The Peacocks started the fourth quarter with another 9-2 run.
- Pero scored six of the nine points during that run, only down by four with five minutes left in the game.
- The Gaels then scored seven straight points to keep their lead, 53-42.
- In the final minute of the game, Briyanah Richardson drove to the basket and made the layup with the foul for the extra point.
- Pero's layup with 33 seconds left, shaved Iona's lead to two points, 55-53.
- The Peacocks were forced to foul, letting Iona score six free throws in the last 30 seconds, to extend the deficit to 61-55.
- Pero got layup at the buzzer, which was not enough, and the Peacocks fell, 61-57.
Inside The Numbers:
- Pero scored a career-high 27 points against Iona while also grabbing a total of seven rebounds.
- Cinnamon Dockery was just shy of a double-double while earning a career high, 11 points, going 7-8 from the free throw line.
- Dockery also totaled a team high of nine rebounds and a team high three steals.
- Richardson racked up 10 points and three rebounds.
- D'Aviyon Magazine dished out a team high of six assists and also earned a total of three steals.
