Women’s Soccer Nets Two Goals in Season Opener against LIU Brooklyn

The Peacocks came up short in a 5-2 season opening defeat at LIU Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY – Freshman Tess Maitland and graduate Alexandria Couto each logged a goal in Saint Peter's women's soccer season opener against LIU Brooklyn on Thursday night in Brooklyn, NY. The Peacocks dropped the contest 5-2 to begin the season 0-1.

Game Notes
  • The Blackbirds scored the game's first two goals by the 26th minute.
  • Maitland cut the deficit in half in the 40th minute, scoring her first collegiate goal off of a rebound, sending the ball to the lower right of the goal.
  • The Blackbirds extended their lead to 3-1 five minutes into the second half.
  • Couto put the Peacocks within one goal in the 62nd minute after sending an 18-yard shot across the goal into the right side.
  • LIU Brooklyn found the net two more times to put away the game 5-2.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Peacocks doubled up the Blackbirds on corner kicks, posting an 8-4 advantage.
  • Both teams recorded 15 shots and eight shots on goal.

Coach's Quotes - Melissa Sherwood
  • "The result is disappointing as was some of our defending this evening; we have to quickly develop an understanding of our new-look back line."
  • "Offensively there are plenty of positives to take out of the performance; we scored two goals and really, we should have scored more, we had 20 shots in the game and created many chances. That is very pleasing."
  • "I am pleased for the goal scorers; Tess, a freshman that has the potential to be a solid contribution to this program over the next four years and Alex, a player who has worked extremely hard to bounce back from a redshirt season last year and who will be a key member of the squad this season."

Up Next
  • The Peacocks return to the pitch next week with two more road contests. On Friday, August 31 the team faces Hampton, and on Sunday, September 2 the team takes on Holy Cross.
