JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's baseball team grabbed its fourth win of the season with an incredible 15-5 victory over Lafayette on Wednesday at Jaroschak Field. The Peacocks secured their first mercy rule win with great efforts throughout the entire game.
"I thought our guys had a really good day of practice yesterday," head coach
TJ Ward said after the win. "The nice weather had the offense feeling good. Our offense has shown signs of being relentless at times, but we just need it to be more consistent. It was good to get one at the Schak."
The Peacocks (4-29, 0-15 MAAC) dominated in the batter's box with 13 hits compared to just three from the Leopards (7-26, 3-13 Patriot League).
Aidan Forrest,
Allen Ramos,
Louis D'Alessio and
Joey Dwyer all finished with a multi-hit game, leading the charge behind
Steve Polizzi's home run in the first inning. This is Polizzi's fourth consecutive game with a home run, which no Peacock has done dating back to at least 2013.
"Steve has been great to work with. He is a hard worker and is always seeking information. His approach has been really good the last week or so. He just needs to stick with it going forward and not expand his sights."
Logan Wenzel picked up his first win of the season on the mound, tallying three strikeouts and allowing no earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Peter's would see its first runs in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run homer by Polizzi, allowing Dwyer and D'Alessio to come home. The Leopards attempted to fight back in the second inning with two runs, but Saint Peter's stuck with the lead.
The Peacocks continued to add on to what was a scoring barrage at the top of the third inning when Forrest singled to center field for his first RBI of the day. Polizzi crossed home plate to make it 4-2.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Lafayette would tie the game at 4-4 with a two-RBI single in the fifth. However, the Peacocks quickly responded with a three-run bottom half of the inning as Ramos cleared the bases on a single to shortstop followed by an error.
Unfazed by the Leopards' fifth run of the afternoon in the sixth inning, SPU would go on to tear through their defense, adding an astounding eight more runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Peacock's rally began when Ramos hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded. That was followed by a two-RBI double by Dwyer. The Peacocks didn't stop there as
Alex Manent walked for an RBI and
Chase Fogg hit a sac fly for his first RBI of the afternoon. Saint Peter's walked-off the game on a two-RBI single by Forrest.
