JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's volleyball team (4-6) is ready to play at LIU (2-6) on Tuesday night at the Steinberg Wellness Center, marking the Peacocks' last nonconference match of the regular season.
The Peacocks are coming off a 1-2 weekend with a win over Morgan State and losses to Penn and Delaware. On the other side, the Sharks just picked up their first two wins of the year with 3-1 victories over Columbia and Iona.
A season ago, LIU swept Saint Peter's in three sets on Oct. 15, so the Peacocks are looking to avenge that loss on Tuesday. There will be some familiarity entering Brooklyn as
Indira T. Benitez Dumeng and
Sibana González Acevedo both came to Jersey City this offseason after transferring from LIU.
ABOUT THE LIU SHARKS
The Sharks struggled out of the gate this season, dropping their first six matches to Grand Canyon, Gonzaga, UTRGV, Sacred Heart, Dartmouth and Rutgers. LIU finally picked up its first win of the season on Friday after taking down Columbia in four sets. Just a day later, the Sharks picked up another four-set victory, this time over Iona.
Junior outside hitter Sara van Gisteren leads the team with 96 kills on the attack, averaging 3.20 kills per set. The senior setter Karly Klaer has been a force to be reckoned with all season. She totals 276 assists on the year, highlighted by a 49-assist and 14-dig performance against UTRGV.
LIU is coached by Tony Trifonov, who is in his first season as the head coach of the Sharks.
