BALTIMORE, Md. - In just its second game of the season, the Saint Peters men's soccer team (0-2) fell, 0-1, to UMBC (2-1) on Monday night at Retriever Soccer Park. A UMBC goal in the 62nd minute pushed the Retrievers past the Peacocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF: The game started quickly off the bat with UMBC two shots on goal within the first two minutes. The Peacocks matched the energy of the Retrievers with their own shot on goal only minutes after with an attempt from
Lex Vaughan. The half remained scoreless despite both teams' opportunities moving up the field. The UMBC Retrievers were not able to break through the Peacocks' defense during any of their eight corner kicks. Saint Peter's goalkeeper,
Moritz Conrad, made three crucial saves to keep the Retrievers scoreless at half.
SECOND HALF: Both teams were eager to break the tie as each put up a shot within the first five minutes of getting back on the pitch.
Tim Strele tried to earn the Peacocks an advantage with an attempt on frame, but the shot was saved by the UMBC keeper. Shortly after, luck changed for UMBC in the 62nd minute of the match. The Retrievers sent a cross into the middle of the box to Matteo Samori, who headed the ball to the lower left corner of the back of the net, putting UMBC ahead with a 1-0 lead.
Samuel Rudjord tried to put the Peacocks on the board with a game equalizer later on, but the attempt was too high. The Peacocks continued their fight until the end of the match with one last chance to even up the scoreboard with a corner kick during the 89th minute, but they were unable to capitalize off the opportunity.
