JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Temple, 3-1, on Thursday at Barry Lane Park. The Peacocks had to play their home opener away from Jaroschak Field due to weather conditions, but that didn't slow them down one bit.
Saint Peter's (1-1-1) jumped out of the gates in attack mode against the Owls (1-2), which was a point of emphasis for the squad after falling behind first in the previous two matches. After several solid chances early, the Peacocks finally put one in the back of the net with a laser from
Julia Pinho Magno in the 30th minute.
"It feels great to finally be here in the white and blue for the Saint Peter's Peacocks, but it really was just a team win," Pinho Magno said after the game. "We just made our plays, played the game plan and started strong and the result worked out."
Just three minutes later, the Peacocks' start got stronger as
Rebecca Tarc scored her first collegiate goal to put the Peacocks up, 2-0. After the first 45 minutes, SPU had outshot the Owls 12-to-4 and dominated time of possession. The Peacocks kept their foot on the gas in the second half, and
Alexa De Barros also netted her first collegiate goal with a strong strike in the 54th minute.
Saint Peter's held a 3-0 lead up until the 10-minute mark when Temple scored to cut its deficit to two at 1-3. It was too little too late for the Owls as the Peacocks notched their first win of the season.
