FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Saint Peter's baseball team took down Sacred Heart, 9-8, after a huge sixth inning on Friday at Veterans Park to secure its first conference win of the season.
The Peacocks (5-11, 1-3 MAAC) were the first on the board after a single up the middle from
Tommy Kendrick brought
Garrett Greco home. The Pioneers (7-8, 2-2 MAAC) answered with three runs to take the lead after the third inning.
In the top of the fifth,
Ashby Vining helped Saint Peter's back into the game with a single that scored two runs, tying the game at 3-3. The Peacocks then took the lead at 4-3 after Kendrick scored on a Sacred Heart error.
The Pioneers then tied it once again at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Saint Peter's then rattled off five runs in the top of the sixth behind big hits from
Alex Rakas and Vining. With a 9-4 lead, the Peacocks let up two scores in the bottom of the inning as the Pioneers cut their deficit down to three at 6-9.
Saint Peter's managed to hold on to its lead down the stretch, taking game one of the series, 9-8.
Vining and Kendrick each recorded two hits, leading the Peacocks and combining for five RBIs. Greco recorded three runs and Rakas recorded two before
Cam Martindale closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth for the win.
The Peacocks will continue action against Sacred Heart tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
