FAIRFAX, Va. – The Saint Peter's baseball team took down George Mason, 10-7, at Spuhler Field on Saturday after holding on to its lead in the bottom of the ninth inning
The Peacocks (2-4) struggled at home plate yesterday vs. the Patriots (2-4) but saw more than double their hits on Saturday, totaling 13. They held a one-run lead at 7-6 heading into the eighth inning before extending it to 10-6 with three runs.
The four-run lead was too much for the Patriots to come back from as George Mason scored just one more time in the bottom of the ninth. The Patriots had an opportunity to tie the game and even take the lead with the bases loaded in their final at bat but
Will Paxton pitched a flyout to left field for the third out as the Peacocks secured the victory.
Saint Peter's led for the first two innings after
Tyler Cotten grounded out to second that allowed
Garrett Greco to make it home. Cotten had a tremendous game, leading the team with four RBIs on three hits. He added two runs himself including a home run in the sixth.
George Mason took its first lead of the game in the third inning after a double to center field brought two Patriots home. Their lead didn't last too long as the Peacocks rattled off three runs in the fifth to regain the advantage at 5-3. Saint Peter's didn't trail for the remainder of the game due to a clutch showing in the eighth inning.
Ashby Vining extended the Peacocks' lead to four runs with a double that scored Cotten and
Tommy Kendrick. George Mason filtered through four pitchers throughout the game as the Peacocks used just two in Paxton and
Ethan Rowland who started the game.
The Peacocks and Patriots will play one last time on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
