SAN ANTONIO – The Saint Peter's baseball team dropped its season-opener on Friday, falling to Incarnate Word, 12-2, at Sullivan Field.
The Peacocks (0-1) kicked off their season with a trip out West to play a four-game series against the Cardinals (1-0), but the first game didn't go Saint Peter's way as it lost by 10 runs.
Both teams were scoreless heading into the bottom of the second inning, but that's when the Cardinals took the lead with five runs including one homer. In the next inning, Incarnate Word extended its lead to eight with another home run.
Facing an 0-8 deficit in the fourth,
Tyler Cotten hit a double, marking Saint Peter's first hit of the 2025 season.
Ashby Vining then brought him home in the next at bat with a single down the left field line. The Cardinals responded with another home run as
Yash Jain was replaced by
Zach Frasher at pitcher.
Incarnate Word continued to score runs in the fourth, taking a commanding 11-1 lead over the Peacocks. Later on, Vining recorded his second hit of the day with a center field bomb for a home run in the seventh.
Logan Baker finished the game with two hits as well, including a double.
The Cardinals took a 10-run lead in the bottom of the eighth to end the game early in San Antonio. Saint Peter's will have two chances at redemption on Saturday with a doubleheader.
